The title of this post might be a little misleading, because I’m actually going to be covering the differences between the left and right sides of your brain, but believe me, it ties into self-actualization.

My idea for this post stems from looking into ancient Egyptian culture, and how it compares to today’s world.

What I found interesting is that when you look at one of the most intellectually superior cultures in world history, you can see that they even figured out the differences between the functions of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. They concluded that the left side of your brain was used for logic and reasoning, while the right side of the brain was used for creativity. Males were considered to be more “left-brained” while the women were “right-brained”. Males were seen in a leadership role and in business, while the females were great raising children; both of which fit with the biological roles of each sex.

Keep in mind, this society had this figured out thousands of years ago, and they were not that far off from what we understand today.

What’s Self-Actualization?

Self-actualization is the fulfilling of your full potential so that you are understanding of the natural and the supernatural worlds. In other words, it’s becoming the best version of yourself by maximizing both hemispheres of your brain.

The Left Brain

The left brain is used for logic, reasoning, and drawing conclusions. This side of the brain is very useful in the success of students in today’s education system, because those with strong left brains (meaning strong left sides of their brains) are found to excel in math and science, where systematic processes are required. Strong left-brained people tend to have a larger vocabulary, as well.

Those with a weak left brain are likely to have difficulty with the following:

  • expressing their feelings
  • showing and understand emotion
  • showing affection
  • being empathetic or appreciative
  • understanding love

If you know that yourself or someone else has difficulty with one or more of the listed attributes, the following are ways to improve the left brain:

  • write in cursive
  • write freely, such as an article or blog (!), something without structure
  • solve a puzzle
  • change your morning routine

The Right Brain

The right brain is used for abstract thinking and creativity. This side of the brain can be useful in “real life” when dealing in situations that require quick thinking. People that are perceived as having “street smarts” likely have a strong right brain. Right-brained people are found in think tanks to promote new ideas. In school, students with strong right brains are found to excel in writing, art, music, and theoretical sciences such as chemistry or physics.

People with a weak right brain are likely to have difficulty with the following:

  • settling into a routine
  • structured writing
  • staying focused on one task
  • following orders/directions

Here’s a list of ways to improve the right brain:

  • memorize sets of data
  • breathe through left nostril
  • create a more repetitive morning routine
  • put away your phone at work

The Self-Actualized Brain

The self-actualized brain is a brain that has no signs of a deficiency on either side of the brain. The brain does not struggle with empathy on the left side, it does not struggle with a structure on the right side. These people are found to be personable and successful.
