Testosterone is a vital hormone that provides several benefits for a man’s body such as:

  • Stimulates levels of growth hormone in the body (increased muscle mass)
  • Boosts protein synthesis
  • Impedes fat storage
  • Improves sex drive
  • Positively affects hair growth

A great, natural way to increase testosterone is through dieting. Here are some testosterone-boosting dieting tips that can be utilized from the comforts of your own kitchen.

  • Eat whole eggs- Rich in vitamin D and aspartic acid, both of which have been clinically proven to increase testosterone levels.
  • Cook with olive oil- Extra virgin olive oil increases the “good” type of cholesterol in our bodies, also known as HDL (high-density lipoprotein) which takes LDL (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad” cholesterol out of our blood. Olive oil also helps Leydig cells, cells in the testicles that convert cholesterol into testosterone, take in more cholesterol.
  • Limit sugar consumption- Large sugar consumptionis connected to low testosterone levels, let alone very unhealthy and can lead to weight gain.
  • Consume healthy carbs- Eat carbs that are dense in nutrients that contain little to no sugar: rice, potatoes, and vegetables.
  • Eat enough protein- A sufficient amount of protein correlates with lean muscle mass, which correlates with higher testosterone levels. A good recommendation would be one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.
  • Limit the amount of soy in your diet- There have been countless studies proving soy to be detrimental to testosterone production and others finding no change in testosterone levels among men with a high soy diet versus a low soy diet. Although there isn’t a concrete answer if soy directly correlates to testosterone, I do believe soy shouldn’t be consumed in high quantities since it is typically found in processed foods. I wouldn’t worry too much about consuming a little amount of soy considering it is found in whey protein, which is a cost-effective protein source that can help you reach your daily protein goal. There are also many products that contain small traces of soy because the facilities they are processed in make soy products, containing labels that say “may contain soy” to inform those who may be allergic to the soy allergen. If you follow a balanced diet, consume nutrient dense foods, and avoid processed foods (heavy in soy), you shouldn’t worry too much about soy consumption.
  • Season foods with turmeric- Turmeric contains anti-estrogenic properties that help our hormones and support our liver, aiding the liver in ridding of excess estrogen. Turmeric also fights off inflammation and protects against cancer. Use it as a seasoning over meat or any kind of dish.
  • Eat avocados- Just like olive oil, avocados are a source of healthy fat that can boost testosterone levels. I recommend cooking with avocados or at least seasoning them (turmeric, salt, etc.) since they are bland by themselves.

Use this time at home to get more familiar with your kitchen and improve your overall health by boosting your testosterone. Be a man, man.
