Naturalism and the Human Physique

Earth Day 2022

Today, around the world, Earth Day is celebrated to bring awareness to environmental protection and to recognize the intrinsic beauty of nature. It’s a day to highlight the human impact on the world and often it’s recommended to spend some time outside. The mass desire to retain the beauty of the Earth should also remind us to take care of our own bodies.

The Earth is full of life, and has many diverse expansive biomes. One of which, the tropical rainforest, has been a target for conservationalists over the last few decades due to rapid deforestation of the Amazonian Rainforest. That rainforest alone accounts for approximately 6-9% of the Earth’s total oxygen production (not the 20% claimed by Kamala Harris, but still a substantial amount).

As of 2020, 39,000 workers are listed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as working in the environmental conservation industry, with an expected 7% annual increase. Some universities in the U.S. have created schools centering around conservation, such as Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL, that recently introduced a new Water School and are promoting more research into aquatic wildlife and marshland conservation.

In greater society, there’s been a cultural shift to be more interconnected with nature. More people are living off-the-grid, more people are learning how to grow their own home garden, and a great deal of effort has been put into sustainable energy sources to limit further deforestation and fracking (yet fracking remains to be the best way of extracting natural gas which is a necessary bridge to sustainable energy). More people than ever before now care about environmental conservation.

To care about the retention of the Earth’s natural state, it logically follows that one should care just as much about the retention of one’s own natural state, and to increase one’s vitality.

Whether you believe the world was created by divine intervention or by circumstance, life on Earth are all composed of organic molecules and therefore all life on Earth shares the same composition.

To appreciate the beauty of the world is to also appreciate the beauty of humanity and the human physique, including your own.

What does it mean to appreciate the beauty of the human physique? To apply it to one’s self it means respecting one’s mental and physical health. Staying healthy and promoting a healthy lifestyle is the best way to appreciate the creation of human physique and humanity as a whole.

Just as environmental philosophers claim it is unethical to ruin the habitats of wildlife, it follows that it is unethical to follow an unhealthy lifestyle.

I hope this is taken into consideration today when celebrating Earth Day 2022.
